Build and Design
To the naked eye very little has changed with the overall design of the ThinkPad T410 compared to past models. It still carries the black rubberized screen lid with ThinkPad logo, still offers the shiny matte-black chassis and palmrest, and still uses the strong and highly visible stainless steel screen hinges. Those are the areas where the similarities stop. The port layout has significantly changed to allow an increase in available ports and even a few new types of connections. Once opened, ThinkPad fans will notice that Lenovo finally centered the screen, so no more thick bezel on one side and a thin bezel on the other. Another change is the shift from a two-piece palmrest and keyboard bezel on older models to one-piece design that is stronger and has fewer gaps to squeak. The bottom has also changed--with a user-access panel being the biggest addition--to let users install more RAM or a wireless card without tearing apart the notebook.

Lenovo is best known for the ThinkPad line of business notebooks that the company inherited from IBM, but the new IdeaPad line of consumer-oriented laptops has managed to generate some buzz thanks to unique designs and a modest price. The Lenovo IdeaPad U150 continues that trend by offering an attractive 11-inch notebook that rivals the Dell Inspiron 11z and the HP Mini 311. Like most 11-inch notebooks currently on the market, the U150 walks the fine line between a full-featured notebook PC and an Intel Atom-based netbook. The U150 is larger and more powerful than the typical $400 netbook, but lacks the impressive features and size of a standard laptop with a high-end Core 2 Duo processor in the $650-$900 price range. That said, the U150 certainly offers an attractive design with a combination of matte black, glossy black, and glossy silver plastics.

GScreen Launches 17-Inch Dual-Screen Laptop

Normally, when looking to increase productivity by maximizing workspace, business users turn to desktop computers with support for multiple monitors, as they can provide better multitasking. One company, however, feels that multi-monitor support should not be confined to the desktop alone. As such, GScreen has been developing a laptop whose two screens aim to provide users with the increased workspace they need. The notebook is dubbed the SpaceBook 17 and comes with two 17.3-inch screens.


The company initially planned for the SpaceBook to have two screens of only 15.4 inches but decided to delay the device in order to switch to the larger LED-backlit displays. The developers did not limit themselves to this, as they also updated the specifications.

The SpaceBook 17 is powered by an Intel Core i7- 620M CPU with 4M Cache and a frequency of 2.66 Ghz. The system also has 4GB DDR3 memory, up to 500GB of storage and the 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 150M GPU for graphics. The device will come with a DVD unit, either a DVD dual (DVD +/-rw) or a super multi (DVD +/-rw + DVD- RAM).

As far as connectivity goes, the SpaceBook 17 features 802. 11b/g/n wireless and Bluetooh 2.1+EDR. The laptop also includes a six-in-one card reader, three USB ports, an eSATA port, FireWire, RJ45 LAN (w/ metal shielding), an RJ11 modem connector, HDMI and a nine-cell battery. The I/O options include jacks for headphones and mic.

The mobile computer will supposedly weigh no more than eight pounds and will run the Windows 7 Professional operating system. The company plans to sell its dual-screen notebook PC through online retailers, such as Amazon and Buy.com, where it is listed with a price tag of $2,895. The product is accompanied by a one-year basic limited warranty.

Lenovo IdeaPad U350

The Lenovo IdeaPad U350 is a notebook that works on the Intel CULV platform. The device is available with the single-core SU2700 as well as the dual-core SU7300 and includes to 4GB of DDR3 memory.

It is pertinent to say that the Lenovo IdeaPad series are known for their unique designs and the U350 is a unique-looking laptop. It comes with a 13.3″ screen offering decent color and contrast. The notebook has a low quality TN display panels but it is considered to be normal for thin-and-light notebooks that are inexpensive. It has also speakers that offer a good quality when listening to the radio or streaming the occasional TV show.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U350 is equipped with a full-size keyboard that is comfortable to type. The notebook has a spacious Synaptics touchpad.

The gadget comes with three USB ports, VGA and HDMI-out, audio in/out, an SDHC card slot and gigabit LAN. When talking about the performance of the device, it is necessary to say that it is powered with the Intel SU2700 CULV processor due to which most programs take noticeably longer to load or access information. As for the Battery life, the notebook is equipped with the 4-cell battery.

Lenovo Created IdeaPad S10-2

Lenovo launched its IdeaPad S10-2. The device comes with the new dual core N280 Intel Atom processor that offers the speed of 667MHz, it also boasts of the hard drive that has 250GB of space.
The S10-2 is available with the conventional set-up of three USB 2.0 ports, but there is no ExpressCard slot. The device is based on Windows 7 as it is equipped with the Atom N280 processor and Intel GMA 950 graphics core in the i945GSE chipset.
The gadget is powered with an extended six-cell battery. The company created two function buttons above the keyboard. One is dedicated for a short-cut to the CyberLink OneKey Recovery 7.0 backup application and the QS (Quick Start) button boots Device VM’s Splashtop ‘instant on’ software. Due to this button it is possible to use a browser an instant messenger or even to look at photos.
The device has a usual performance for a dual core Atom netbook that comes with Intel graphics. As for the life battery, it is possible to work on the netbook during three and a quarter of hours.
Lenovo developed a ten-inch Atom netbook with the improved hardware and also the company made alterations in software as the netbook runs Windows 7 Starter Edition.

At the risk of enraging Apple zealots, I'm just going to come right out and say it: Why buy an iPad when you can get a convertible tablet PC for less money?

I'm speaking in particular of the new Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3T-0651, which Best Buy has on sale for $449.99 (plus $11.99 for shipping and sales tax in most states).

Even with those added charges, you get out the door for less than $499--the price of Apple's entry-level iPad model. The IdeaPad may not be as thin or sexy, but it can do so much more.

See, it starts out like a traditional Netbook, one with Intel's Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Windows 7 Starter.

Oh, and it has a 10.1-inch multitouch touch screen, meaning it can take full advantage of Windows 7's touchy-feely capabilities.

The screen can also pivot a full 180 degrees, then fold down on top of the keyboard to create a traditional tablet experience.

Like most PCs these days (but unlike the iPad), the IdeaPad comes with a Webcam, a media card reader, and USB ports--it runs Flash, too. This model also has an eight-cell battery, which is impressive given its compact size. The battery doesn't jut out from the rear like on some Netbooks.

Now, I haven't used the IdeaPad myself, nor have I experienced Windows 7 multitouch firsthand (pun!). In fact, I don't see much appeal in tablets at all, so I'm not the target audience for this or the iPad.

That said, it's hard to argue with the math. From a features and capabilities standpoint, the IdeaPad blows the iPad out of the water. Also, it costs less--a lot less if you compare it with the $699, 64GB model (which still has only 25 percent of the IdeaPad's storage capacity).

Unboxing the Lenovo IdeaPad s10-3t with 8 cell battery

The 8 cell battery does stick out significantly, but it looks like it will provide a good handle for the device instead of creating an awkward user situation. This remains one of the hottest netbooks of CES 2010 in my opinion and I look forward to seeing what it can do!

Apple's late to the Core i5 laptop

The mobile i5 chip is, in a word, fast. Made on Intel's cutting-edge 32-nanometer manufacturing process, it handily outperforms the older Core 2 Duo. Tech Web site AnandTech said the i5 processor delivers "the single largest performance improvement we've seen from a new mobile processor in years," and Tom's Hardware said it "boasts the best balance between desktop-class speed and true mobile usability we've ever seen."

Dell: The Dell 15.6-inch Studio (S15Z-3630CPN) offered at Best Buy is a good example. Priced at $1,049, it comes, as many systems do, with the popular Core i5-430M processor (2.53GHz) and an ATI Radeon HD 4570 graphics chip with 512MB dedicated video memory.

Other features for this Dell Studio model include 4GB DDR3 memory, a 500GB Serial ATA hard disk drive (7200 rpm), two built-in 2W speakers, a built-in optical drive, and Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit operating system.

Apple, by comparison, offers a 15-inch aluminum MacBook Pro for a pricey $2,299 that uses the older 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo and comes with specifications that are otherwise pretty similar to the (much) cheaper Dell system.

Hewlett-Packard: A $1,299 15.6-inch HP Envy (considered the company's consumer luxury laptop line) offers similar specifications to the Dell system but with more powerful graphics silicon. In addition to the Core i5-430M, it comes with a more powerful 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830 graphics chip, a 320GB disk drive (7,200rpm), and 4GB of DDR3 memory.

Sony: This week, a slim Sony system (VPCS111FM/S) with a 13.3-inch display found a spot on store shelves at Best Buy for the first time. Although it misses the sub-inch-thick cutoff for ultrathins by a few tenths of an inch, it does fall into the thin category (1.2 inches in height) and certainly does qualify as one of the thinnest Core i5 laptops yet--and one of the lightest, at 4.4 pounds.

Other Sony specs include a 500GB hard disk drive (5400RPM), Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD, 4GB of memory, a built-in optical drive, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. One thing to note: No ATI or Nvidia graphics here. Ultraportables--the designation that Best Buy gives it--typically don't come with discrete (standalone) graphics cards.

On the upside, Sony offers a two-year limited warranty for the system, a step up from the typical one-year consumer laptop warranties. It's priced at $1,049.

Asus Eee PC 900 Review

Few could argue that Asus created something special when it launched the Eee PC last year. The idea of making a truly mobile, yet very affordable mobile computer was welcomed by the Press and consumers in equal measure. Although the Eee PC 4G 701 that Andy reviewed back in October 2007 was a great machine, there were a couple of issues that took away some of the shine. Now however, I have the Eee PC 900 to play with, and it looks as though Asus may have got everything just about perfect this time.

Anyone who's got a few years under their belt, like myself, will be well aware that the concept of a basic, portable computer with solid state storage and no moving parts is nothing new. About ten years ago I did a significant amount of my writing on a Psion Series 5, which was laughably referred to as a PDA. In the Series 5, Psion created a device so usable, that I was able to write entire features on it while sitting on the train. The company then pushed the boundaries even further when it launched the Series 7 and eventually the NetBook.

What Psion got right with its machines was a balance of essential functionality, small form factor and great battery life. As time moved on, though, fully fledged notebooks became smaller and lighter and end users wanted to run feature rich (read bloated) operating systems on their mobile computers. All this spelled the end for Psion hardware (although it did spin off its EPOC OS as Symbian), and for a long time we simply didn't see machines like the Series 7 and NetBook. Thankfully Asus realised that there was room in the market for a basic, affordable machine that didn't need to run the latest version of Windows - thus the Eee PC was born.

For anyone who hasn't heard of the Eee PC before (where have you been hiding?), let me give you the low down. The Eee PC is a very small machine measuring 225 x 165 x 35mm (WxDxH) and weighing around 1kg. that puts it well and truly into the ultra-portable sector, being lighter than even a Sony TZ31MN, and smaller too. This is a machine built to be used on the move, without the need to make much space for it in your bag. The Eee PC comes in two colours, pearlescent white, like the one I'm reviewing here and black - yes, that does sound very similar to Apple's MacBook range, but that's most definitely where the similarities end.

Samsung AMOLED Laptop launching soon

Remember Samsung’s transparent AMOLED laptop? Initially, we thought it was the coolest thing we have seen but then came the Apple iPad. Nevertheless, word is around that Samsung will launch this laptop by the end of this year. The laptop (no name) features a 14 inch AMOLED display. AMOLED displays are said to be thinner and they provide better color display. These AMOLED laptops also help to consume less power than a usual laptop does. These types of display are normally used in well-known phones that provide the best video quality and also a long lasting battery life. It is because of that screen that the images come across as bright, sharp and clear. Though, it does create a question of one’s privacy since the AMOLED display is visible. Well, only time would answer that when Samsung releases this anticipated laptop.
Aside from that, Samsung has huge plans in store to produce even more devices with transparent screens and that hopefully will release this year itself.

Design

Ever since Gateway rebranded itself as a more fashionable notebook manufacturer, the company has been on a roll in churning out good-looking budget laptops, and the NV7915u is no exception. The glossy NightSky Black lid, with its subtle Honeycomb pattern, isn’t as luxe as something like the HP Envy 15, but neither does it look cheap. However, the lid doesn’t hide fingerprints as well as the Midnight Blue color found on the NV5807u.

Other design flourishes include a matte silver hinge with the power button built into the side (like Sony VAIOs), a glossy upper deck, and LED lights and touch-sensitive controls that glow red. PC maker Asus has released a new Republic of Gamers (ROG) G73Jh laptop, which comes with 17.3-inch display, Intel Core i7-820QM processor and DirectX 11-capable ATI Radeon HD5870 graphics.

According to Asus, the new laptop features an angular design inspired by the F-117 Nighthawk. It comes with heat and noise-generating components at the rear of the notebook and the keyboard plane is inclined five degrees, improving ergonomics and ensuring optimal comfort while gaming and typing.

The new laptop, which measures 320mm x 415mm x 56.89~18.9mm, comes with DVD super-multi/blu-ray combo, 8GB DDR3 SDRAM and built in two megapixel camera.

In addition, the new G73Jh equips 1GB GDDR5 VRAM and 1TB of storage space for gaming and multitasking performance. The G73Jh also features one-click, on-the-fly overclocking capabilities.

With the DirectX 11-capable graphics and 7.1-channel HD audio with EAX 4.0 compatibility, the G73Jh delivers NxG gaming on a mobile platform. It has a storage capacity of 2.5-inch SATA 320/500/640GB, SATA 320/500GB and double HDD support, the company said.

Toshiba unveiled its first touchscreen laptop yesterday, and we were there to give it a go and get some first hands on snaps.



Touchscreen to one side for a moment - the U500-1EX packs a 320GB hard drive, 4GB RAM, an Intel Core i3 processor and all the ports you'd want, including USB, HDMI and Ethernet. There's also an HD camera, DVD dual layer drive, and a 5-in-1 card reader.









The laptop in itself is probably not one for trekking around too much though - it's not heavy at just over 2kg, but it's not exactly light either. The 13-inch screen means though that if you do need to be taking it somewhere, it is compact enough not to be a pain.



But of course, portability is not the main selling point of this lappy. We gave the touchscreen capabilities a go on a couple of the apps and found it to be very responsive, and functional rather than gimmicky.

The touchscreen controls are pretty much the same as those you would find on a touchscreen phone, such as pinch to zoom.

The photos app in particular is very fluid and you're able to pick up photos, zoom, rotate and send them back to the photo bar with just a few flicks of your finger.



The U500-1EX is going to hit shelves for £649 with 320GB HDD and 4GB RAM. The price will mean it's not going to be for everyone, but for those looking for a little more from their laptop, the U500-1EX could be a winner.
